“the ONLY Hair Salon/Book Store in the WORLD!”
You are now in the know on all that is happening at Beauty and the Book!
January 18, 2000 marked the occasion of the Grand Opening of Beauty and the Book, the ONLY Hair Salon/Book Store in the World!
We have been having a GRAND time every since.
Oxford American Magazine, The Magazine of Good Southern Writing, surprised me by covering my first Grand Opening with an awesome feature that began the media mecca to my shop including features on Oprah Winfrey’s OXYGEN NETWORK, to The Oprah Winfrey Show to kicking off Diane Sawyer and Charlie Gipson’s READ THIS Book Club on Good Morning America and features in The Los Angeles Times, Time Magazine, Newsweek, and The Wall Street Journal to name a few!
Just months after opening my Beauty and the Book, I started my book club with six complete strangers that has now grown into the largest “meeting and discussing” book club in the world, 550+ chapter of The Pulpwood Queens Book Clubs and yes, a few Timber Guys, the men who have bravely joined in our crusade and mission to promote authors, books, literacy, and reading all while having some BIG TIME FUN!
If it isn’t fun folks, I ain’t doing it!
We really like to roll out the red carpet, or should I say leopard print carpet, for all the authors that grace our doors!
You see our signature look is animal print as we are WILD about beauty in books.
We love to treat all our authors royally and bow to the feet of our author Kings and Queens!
We have had some amazing book signings all hosted by my Pulpwood Queen Book Club chapters that have included the likes of Kinky Friedman, (who was running for Governor of Texas at the time), Senator Kay Bailey Hutchison, and of Golden Girl Fame, Rue McClanahan.
Pulitzer Prize winners, Edward Humes and the late great Doug Marlette, Pat Conroy, Fannie Flagg, John Berendt and even Supermodel Paulina Porizkova.
We showcase all of them each year, close to 50 authors who always grace our annual book club hosted festival which we call GIRLFRIEND WEEKEND, always held Martin Luther King Weekend in January of each year that usual Grand Finale is our “Great Big Ball of Hair” Ball!
We even now have our own documentary by filmmaker, William Torgerson that won the Audience Choice Award for Full Feature Film at The International Phenom Film Festival in Shreveport/Bossier, LA Film Festival!
Beauty and the Book is a bit off the beaten path but well worth the trip.
We are a full service hair salon and specialize in Chi, Sebastian, and Paul Mitchell Products and carry our Pulpwood Queen Book Club Selections!
Now located at The Nail and Hair Shed, Laura McClelland, is the owner/nail technician and Ashlee Holmes, our other nail technician, we complete our team of beauty specialists to help bring out the best in YOU!
Whether you may me be blonde, brunette, or red or“READ” head, we treat all of our customers as we would like to be treated ourselves, as royalty!
I have been called in the past to Shreveport/Bossier to do celebrities hair for concerts including The Go Go’s, Art Garfunkel, and my favorite party band of all time The B-52’s!
My last celebrity to do was Joan Rivers, what a reader and what a wonderful, wonderful woman! If all my clients could be like Joan Rivers, my life’s work would be a dream!
We also do Gift Certificates and can do special custom gift packages for that special someone who would enjoy a truly special and royal gift.
Stewart Cohen Pictures has even dubbed us “HOME OF THE TEXAS BIG HAIR”, after doing a photo shoot for them for a gallery exhibit in Dallas, Texas.
You never know who may walk through our doors, from Don Henley of “The Eagles” fame to America’s favorite cowboy group, “Riders in the Sky”! And Darlings, the photo opportunities here are endless.
My bookstore features mostly our OFFICIAL Pulpwood Queen and Timber Guy Book Club Selections and of course my book, “The Pulpwood Queens’ Tiara Wearing, Book Sharing Guide to Life’ which I currently working on the second updated edition!
You see everybody has a story and it’s my mission in life that we share each other’s lives by reading, writing, and sharing our stories.
I have always said, “A story not told or written down is a library lost to not only family and friends, but to the world!”
I know that if I can get you to come all the way out to my neck of the piney woods in East Texas just once, you’ll be back to grace my doors again and again!
We revel in making a visit to Beauty and the Book, BIG TIME FUN!
So what are you waiting for, come for a visit, “We’ll keep the hairdryer on for YOU!”
